Estonian Vodka from Moe

In a land far in the North, in the middle of swamps and bogs, in the midst of an empty wasteland lies a settlement called Moe. In this place nearly the sole employer is our fine spirit distillery which is the second oldest working vodka distillery in the world. In this grim village we know how to appreciate fine spirits and how to produce them. What else is there to do here in this godforsaken place?
Vodka has a documented history of production in the area of Estonia that dates back to the 1400s. Moe is one of the few places in the world where the Estonian Vodka with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is produced.
According to regulations, PGI-indicated Estonian Vodka must be produced entirely in Estonia using raw materials grown in Estonia and Estonian water. The PGI awarded to our products illustrates well the way we think and operate at Moe. We place great value on age old traditions, local high quality raw materials and authenticity.

About the distillery

In 1886 the famous pharmacist Jakob Kurberg founded a modern steam-powered distillery, a liqueur factory, a brewery and a lemonade factory in Moe. Thanks to Mr. Kurberg Moe Distillery is one of the oldest operating distilleries in the world!

Moe Distillery produces premium spirit drinks from grain. Our vodka is very well known in the local market – we are certain that every Estonian knows Moe vodka. In addition, at our invitation, Estonia received the first protected geographical indication – Estonian Vodka. Our vodka brands Rye 1886, Silver Swan 1688, Silver Swan Pure Rye and J.J. Kurberg Rye are all geographically protected.
We also produce the first and only whiskey in Estonia -Tamm & Rukis, as well as, several flavoured spirits, distillates and Mohn Poppy Gin.

Muddis Brewery is named after the former Muddis (Moe) manor. Our small beer factory produces artisanal beers. Most popular Muddis beers are New York Lager and IPA. Dark and vintage beers are also available.

In addition to alcohol production, we import wines. Moe wine selection includes only products of high quality. All of our wines are chosen by Moe’s sommelier. We represent wineries such as Carl Loewen, Rexach Baqués, Piera 1899, Les Collines du Bourdic, Cellar Batea, Pago los Balancines, Agricola de Vinos la Higuera, Bodegas Eisdosela, Gran Bierzo and Feudi di San Gregorio.
Moe Museum and Visitor Center is also located in Moe. The center is dedicated to giving an extensive overview of the history and traditions of spirit production in Estonia through several centuries. The museum has been open in Moe since 1971, however, it was renovated in 2021. Visitor center also operates Moe Krog – our tavern and tasting room.

Moe Distillery, Muddis Brewery and the Moe Visitor Center form the Moe Group. The group operates on the same principles and towards the same goals.

Values

High quality on every step.
We use only local and high-quality ingredients and have zero tolerance for dyes and added sugar. We use traditional production processes to ensure the high quality of our beverages.

Sustainability.
We produce a wide range of organic beverages and invest into minimising environmental damage, for example by using mainly green energy.
Moe places high value on circular consumption, as one of our biggest investments has been a cogeneration plant. This means that as we distil spirits, we produce heat for the city of Rakvere. Furthermore, in our factory the by-product from distilling can be transformed into farm animal feed.
The by-product from our brewery is also suitable for farm animals as feed and is gifted to the village farm’s cattles.

Supporting the community.
We aim to contribute to the development of our community by promoting sports and culture. From year to year, we have sponsored large local festivals, various concerts, theatre events, films and art exhibitions. We have sponsored the Moe football team and beach tennis in Estonia.
